The Rainbow Mountains (also known as the rainbow of seven colors) are a popular tourist destination. Although it is known that the coloring is not as colorful as the photos circulating on the internet, it is a must-do if you are travelling in Peru.

Since we like to dispose of our travels as a separate unit, we didn't consider a tour this time either. However, after calculating our planned trip, we reconsidered the matter and set out to find a tour operator with an offer that matched our budget. From one travel agency to another, we were offered the tour at a better price, as is the way in Peru. Mention previous price quotes and the travel agent will try to counter the competition. We managed to negotiate a tour including travel, entrance tickets to a nature reserve, breakfast and a lavish buffet lunch for 150 p.

At the beginning of our tour we bought "Agua de Florida" , which when inhaled, helps with health problems in elevation.
Aqua de Florida
While chewing coca and inhaling aqua de florida is helpful for altitude sickness, the most effective method is to drink lots of water.
We also got our passport stamp on a postcard which we bought there, since the vendor was not present we had it for free. Muhehe. Suddenly there was a herd of horses on our left. Lots of people didn't hesitate and climbed to the top on horseback . A horse ride to the top costs 60 p per person. The hike up Rainbow Mountain didn't take long, and after about half an hour its summit loomed before us. As Mathew had a headache from the elevation, we were given a lift part of the way. The ride would have been beautiful, but everyone involved paid for it, us with money, the horse with fatigue and the lady with frostbite.

We stood at the very top and enjoyed the view of Rainbow Mountain, but it didn't last long and our view was obscured by fog. Oncoming hikers were not so lucky and had to wait about one hour in the cold for the experience.

Since we had not been thoroughly informed about the city, we were constantly absorbed in wondering where in the world we were. Our amazement peaked the moment we walked through another alleyway and found ourselves in the heart of the Cusco on Plaza de Armas. Ahead of us, the landmark cathedral del Cuzco towered into the sky, and all around us the magnificent colonial architecture surrounded us.
It is very cold up there, so it is very important to be well dressed. Drink lots of water and take your time while hiking to the top. The altitude is not to be underestimated. We are glad we experienced it, but in the future, we will pick up an another "rainbow mountain" less crowded and less known as palccoyoo, the rainbow mountain alternative.
